David Adcock

"Good old Sunday morning
Bells are ringing everywhere..."

This lyric from the Allman Brothers' "Blue Sky" and the tune's happy rhythm guitar refrain goes to the heart of David Adcock's 'Toons 'Til Two' radio program.

From 1983 until his death in 2001, Sunday FM radio listeners in Jackson, Mississippi were treated to the finest in progressive FM rock radio music. David Adcock was a pioneer in this underground genre of cooly soft-spoken, knowing DJ's who spun magic with the album versions of music of the 60's and 70's.

The show originally aired as 'Toons 'Til Noon' on the legendary WZZQ FM underground radio station in Jackson, later moving its hours and changing it's name to "Toons 'Til Two." The show moved to WTYX in Jackson when WZZQ went off the air and every Sunday morning, thrilling guitar riffs, exhilarating horn melodies, and fantastic drum solos filled the airwaves.

David Adcock and the progressive FM stations played album oriented rock, smoothly segued with musically and thematically related sets as their playlists. The sets may have been planned in advance or spontaneously put together in the studio on the air. All were hand picked and played by the DJ on the air, a style known as free-form radio.

The DJs announced the names of the tune and the bands who performed them at the end of the sets of between six and nine LP album cuts. The cuts were arranged artistically so that the music would flow from one song to another. The sets were related in some way thematically or musically to give the FM rock radio experience cohesion and meaning.

David Adcock was the best of the best.
